The painting is inspired by a poem by Keats. The new exhibition promises for the first time to give serious attention to the politics of art and the shimmering contradictions of a movement that combined the love of history, mythology and the classics with scientific study of natural phenomena and scathing contempt for the contemporary scene. What was startlingly unusual was their sheer conviction that art could alter society itself. Recent feminist scholarship reveals how far the brotherhood was a hitherto-neglected pre-Raphaelite sisterhood as well.

The main object of the journey was to paint Ruskin's portrait. Even the features of models made famous by Pre-Raphaelite portraits, which had been unfashionable when the movement began, had become the key markers for female attractiveness by the end of the nineteenth century. At last we start to glimpse this lost pre-Raphaelite's potential significance as early undercover homosexual artist and interpreter of Jewish identity. But the absolute star of the show is Morris. InMillais exhibited a new painting, Christ in the House of his Parents, which drew criticism from a number of circles, including author Charles Dickens, for blaspheming the Virgin Mary. Hunt alone pursued the same style throughout most of his career and remained true to Pre-Raphaelite principles.

The three original members were quickly joined by James Collinson and Frederic George Stephens both paintersWilliam Michael Rossetti a poet and critic, and brother of Rossettiand the sculptor Thomas Woolner. Several artists, most notably Edward Burne-Jones, began to paint in the Aesthetic style, producing sensual works designed to evoke bodily response in the viewer. The artists who would become the Pre-Raphaelites particularly admired Van Eyck's Arnolofini Portraitfor for its subtle symbolism, its renderings of natural light, and the intensely realized surfaces and textures. Brown was also the artist with the practical energy to open soup kitchens for the starving and a labour exchange for the unemployed in Manchester. Yet its artists and ideals remained influential; its works, greatly admired.

Bitumen produces unstable areas of muddy darkness, an effect the Pre-Raphaelites despised. It was an audacity that applied to literature as much as to painting and the decorative arts. Holman Hunt was involved with the movement to reform design through the Della Robbia Pottery company.

This is a beautiful, potent, and mysterious tarot, with undercurrents of innocence and decadence, purity and passion. One follower who developed his own distinct style was Aubrey Beardsleywho was pre-eminently influenced by Burne-Jones. In attempts to revive the brilliance of colour found in Quattrocento art, Hunt and Millais developed a technique of painting in thin glazes of pigment over a wet white ground in the hope that the colours would retain jewel-like transparency and clarity.

What is known of their lives and their roles in a movement that spanned over half a century? Other artists, such as Burne-Jones and Dante Rossetti, joined Morris's efforts, producing designs and decoration for furniture and tapestries.

All in all, this has been quite a year for William Morris. Decorative Arts Although Pre-Raphaelitism is most readily associated with painting, the movement had a profound effect on the decorative arts.
